Shofley wins his first major under par in emotional first-round victory

'The drops of water break through the rock'. After birdieing the 72nd and final hole on the final day to win the 106th PGA Championship for the first time in his career, Xander Schauffele (31-USA) revealed a German text from his father the day before the tournament. It meant that he had put in enough effort and it would come true. This rich man is a soul mate. As a young man, his father, Stefan, who represented Germany in the decathlon, had his Olympic dreams dashed when he lost the sight in one eye in a car accident while traveling to a team training camp. But he went on to become a club professional, raising his son Xander as a PGA Tour player, and they realized their dreams together when he won gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Despite his world-class skills, Shoafley also had the unwelcome label of 'runner-up specialist' following him. "There were a lot of people on social media who were expecting me to show my lack of backbone again, but I was just waiting for the right time," he says.

The final four rounds of the PGA Championship ($18.5 million purse), the second major of the men's golf season, were played on Tuesday at Valhalla Golf Club (par 71-7609) in Louisville, Kentucky, USA.

Shofley, who started the day tied for the lead, was aggressive throughout, carding seven birdies and one bogey for a 6-under 65. As the crowd of tens of thousands heated up with each passing hole, Shofley faced a tricky situation on the 18th (par-5) as he took his final qualifying test to become a major champion. He was on the same page as Bryson DeChambeau (31-USA), who finished the day seven shots back. DeChambeau watched the match on the big screen and prepared for a possible extension.

Shofley's powerful tee shot traveled 325 yards. But the ball landed in the grass on the edge of the bunker lip and he had to stand in the sand. 247 yards to the hole. If he lost his balance, the ball could easily fall into the hazard. His second shot, an iron, traveled 219 yards and landed in the fairway, and he hit his approach shot with 36 yards to go, leaving him two feet from the hole. His birdie putt to the inside left of the hole was tense to the last, circling once and then disappearing.

Shofley pumped his fist in the air as a huge roar echoed around the golf course. Shoafley shot a first-round 62 (9-under par), the lowest round in a major, to take a one-shot lead and never relinquished it in a wire-to-wire victory. Shoepley also shot the low 토토 round of 62 (8-under par) in the first round of the 2023 U.S. Open, but finished in a tie for 10th.

Shofley's 21-under-par 263 for the tournament is the most under-par round in the history of the four majors. The previous marks were 20-under par by Jason Day (AUS) at the 2015 PGA Championship, Henrik Stenson (SWE) at the 2016 Open, Dustin Johnson (USA) at the 2020 Masters and Cameron Smith (AUS) at the 2022 Open. It was Shoepley's eighth career victory, coming a year and 10 months after the July 2022 Scottish Open. He, along with Jordan Spieth (31) and Justin Thomas (31), was part of the "Golden Generation" of American golfers who rose to prominence in college. However, he hasn't been able to make a strong impression, as he has missed too many tournaments due to a lack of hindsight. In 175 events leading up to this tournament, he had eight wins, 14 runner-up finishes, nine third-place finishes and 43 top-five finishes. Shoepley has also finished runner-up in majors, at the 2018 Open and the 2019 Masters. Shofley also finished runner-up at last week's Wells Fargo Championship, losing in a playoff to Rory McIlroy (35-NI).

"His efforts to increase his distance while maintaining accuracy to win a major has paid off," said Chris Como, who has been his swing coach since last year, "I've never seen a player as well versed in swing theory as he is." His father, Stephan, who was in Hawaii, reportedly broke down and cried during a congratulatory phone call with his son, now a major champion.

Shofley says he's always been a "cosmopolitan" and will help develop world golf. He was the only member of his family born in the United States. His father is German with French ancestry, born in Stuttgart, Germany. His Japanese mother 토토사이트 순위 was born in Taipei, Taiwan, and raised in Japan from the age of two, so he has relatives in both Taiwan and Japan. My wife Maya's mother, whom I met in college and married after seven years of dating, is also Japanese.
